The Pewaukee Public Library, established in 2005, serves the City and Village of Pewaukee.  The 27,000 square foot facility, located on the corner of Main & Prospect, houses over 100,000 items including books, DVDs, newspapers & magazines, music CDs, and audiobooks.  The Library is a member of the Waukesha County Federated Library System and shares a catalog of over 1 million items with the 15 other Waukesha County libraries.

Each year the Library circulates around 350,000 items, holds an average of 400 innovative programs for children, teens, and adults (with overall attendance around 14,000 people), and approximately 600 people visit the library every day.

Pewaukee Library also offers public meeting rooms, private study rooms, Internet computers, online subscription databases, and wi-fi throughout the building.  Additionally the Library participates in the Wisconsin Public Library Consortium which offers a large collection of digital materials through Wisconsin’s Digital Library.

The Pewaukee Library has two active support organizations that help fund special projects and purchases.  The Library Foundation helped to raise some of the funding to build the library and works on larger projects such as the rain garden, the self-checkout machine and the Ron Feuerstein Young Adult Area.  The Friends of the Library raise funds through book sales, coffee bar sales, and the rental DVD collection and fund many of the library’s educational and entertainment programs, supplement the Library’s material budget by starting new collections such as the Adult Graphic Novel collection, and purchase much needed shelving, book carts, display units as the library continues to grow.

The Joint Library Board was established through an intergovernmental agreement between the City of Pewaukee and the Village of Pewaukee.  The Joint Library Board consists of seven members as required under Wisconsin Statutes.  Three members shall be appointed by the City of Pewaukee Mayor, subject to confirmation by the City Council and three members shall be appointed by the Pewaukee Village President, subject to confirmation of the Village Board and.  No more than one member from each municipality can be an elected official.  One additional member is nominated by the Superintendent of the Pewaukee School District and shall be a City of Pewaukee resident.  This individual will be appointed by the Mayor subject to confirmation by the City Council.

The Joint Library Board operates under the authority of Section 43.58, Wisconsin Statutes.  They have all the powers and duties as set forth in the statute.  The Board shall plan for, implement and manage all library services, programs, and activities for the Village and City of Pewaukee including Budgeting, Contracts & Agreements, Appointment of Librarian, Ownership of Assets, and appointing a Fiscal Agent.

The funding of the budget and the payment of all costs of the Joint Library is shared by each Municipality based upon the percentage of each municipality’s equalized value as determined annually be the Wisconsin Department of Revenue for the following year’s operating budget.
